Encounter with Vikings

Near the top of Newfoundland there is a confirmed site of a viking settlement in a place called L'Anse aux Meadows.  The village itself is tiny with only a handful of houses.  We stopped to eat before going into the National Historic Site.

At the site there are reconstructions of the viking settlements as well as the remains of the foundations of the settlements.  Nina was enthralled with the black smith and asked him why he was quenching the nails in water and not oil (she is a big Forged in Fire fan).

There is also a nice trail around the area, but we had to cut the hiking short as we had a date with a lighthouse on Quirpon Island.

The descent was grueling and felt like 900 times longer than the hike up.  It seemed to go around the entire perimeter of the mountain.  I'm glad I had good boots with ankle supports because it would have been easy to twist an ankle on the uneven path.  Eventually we all made it down in one piece.  It was the toughest hike I had done to date.

Bonnie Bay Marine Station

At Norris Point there is a marine station.  It had different things like whale baleen and unique sea creatures like a lobster with four claws, and a blue lobster.  In the area they harvest uni.  I got to hold one.  I wanted to rip it open and eat it, but I don't think that would have gone over well.  Right outside the station we saw a pilot whale going by.

Around Trout River

Going from Norris Point to Trout River we had to go around a big lake and past by the Tablelands.  We took the opportunity to take the Southeast Brook Falls trail that we missed on the way in.  The falls themselves were tiny.
